Therapeutic Modalities & Techniques

While I strongly believe that the relationship and connection between therapist and client is both the foundation and the catalyst for change, it is also essential to find a therapist with excellent clinical skills, thorough training and substantial experience.  I consider myself to be eclectic in my approach, meaning I utilize an array of therapy modalities and techniques, depending on the presenting issues and the personality of my client.  It is crucial that you as my client are continually evolving, and that you leave each session feeling that progress was made and with something to work on between sessions.  No two individuals are the same, thus no two treatment plans will be the same.

Therapeutic Modalities

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

— Identifies and challenges distorted or unhealthy thoughts in order to change destructive patterns of behavior.  Together we will identify these thoughts, challenge them, and replace them with healthier and more positive ones, thereby improving overall mood and functioning.

Emotionally Focused Therapy

— Focuses on relationships and the concepts of attachment and bonding.  Together we will examine unhealthy or insecure patterns in the current relationship and take steps to create more security and trust, thus moving the relationship in a healthier, more positive direction.

Strength Based Therapy

— Focuses on internal strengths and resources, and less on shortcomings or weaknesses.  Together we will establish a positive mindset that builds on your best qualities and allows you to find your strengths and improve your inner resilience.

Therapeutic Techniques

Talk Therapy

This is one of the most basic but also most essential therapy techniques we will use.  Talking about the things that are bothering you, hurting you, or confusing you, to an empathic and trained therapist, allows you gain clarity, perspective and insight.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing)

EMDR is a powerful and effective way to treat a variety of issues. Traumatic memories can be trapped in the brain as inadequately processed memories that continue to interfere with the present. By using bilateral stimulation, we can help access the brain’s own natural adaptive memory processing system to clear out the blocked memory thereby creating healthier beliefs about one’s self. Creative Visualization/Guided Imagery

This is a technique that uses the imagination to create mental imagery and affirmation to produce positive changes in your life.  It can also be a powerful form of relaxation and a way to strengthen the mind/body connection, which is an important factor in overall health and well-being.

Hypnotherapy

This form of therapy allows us to enter the subconscious mind, accessing stored memories that can’t always be reached in the conscious mind and then releasing them. Together we examine the faulty conclusions and decisions about self that were made based on these early experiences and replace them with healthy and positive ones.

Meditation

This is a practice of turning your attention to a single point of reference.  It can include focusing on breath, bodily sensation, or a mantra.  Meditation has been shown to help with anxiety, depression, and stress, and to increase focus and awareness.
